This Week in Toronto (Dec. 19 - 25)

This being Christmas Week, the number of concerts are way down. My top choice is the Orpheus Choir Christmas Concert, Christmas With Adrianne. Adrianne is soprano Adrianne Pieczonka who makes Toronto her home. On this occasion, you can hear her together with her partner in life and in art, mezzo soprano Laura Tucker, in a program of Christmas favourites. Robert Cooper conducts the Royal Conservatory of Music Orchestra. Also appearing is the Sidgwick Scholars of the Orpheus Choir, and Edward Moroney at the piano. The event takes place at Koerner Hall on Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m. http://www.orpheustemp.com/2011/08/27/christmas-with-adrianne/

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra's last performance of Messiah is this evening at Roy Thomson Hall, with Nicholas Kraemer conducting the TS forces and soloists Suzie LeBlanc, tenor Lawrence Wiliford, mezzo Meg Bragle, and bass Andrew Foster-Williams. And the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir of course. Then it's onto three performances of the TSO Christmas Holiday Pops. Steven Reineke conducts the Canadian Brass and the Etobicoke School of the Arts Chorus. Performances on Tuesday Dec. 20 at 8 p.m., plus two shows (2 p.m. and 8 p.m.) on Dec. 21. http://tso.ca/Concerts-And-Tickets/Concert-Calendar.aspx

On Dec. 22 and 23 8 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall, The Canadian Tenors is presenting Home for the Holidays. These four guys are classically trained singers doing cross-over. Interestingly in the Roy Thomson Hall/Massey Hall website, their names aren't even listed, but one of them is Toronto tenor Victor Micallef who was in the COC Ensemble Studio some years ago. There's no mention of what they are singing - such is pops concert marketing - but it's easy enough to guess! http://www.roythomson.com/eventdetail?eventId=1033
